To me, my disability isn't a limitation but an opportunity to demonstrate how I can live independently and navigate life challenges.
Using assistive technology in work or studying, I learn new programs and databases quickly. This ability allows me to assist companies such as Transport for NSW, Curtin UniversityIt and Blue Diamond Transfers in testing their applications, programs and training modules to ensure they are accessible for the visually impaired.
As a Braille user and proofreader at Vision Australia, I advocate for Braille to be used in everyday activities so a person with vision loss can be independent. When travelling, I am always reading braille in elevators, restrooms and other areas, raising concerns to Hotel management and/or local councils. I once raised a petition on change.org in 2016 for Braille to be mandatory on all medication dispensed throughout Australia, something which is still an issue.
Recently, I collaborated with the car-sharing company Uber to create educational videos promoting the rights of assistance dogs. This stems from my experience of having my assistance dog, Kimba, refuse entry into taxis and Uber. Now, I lend my voice to raising awareness and educating drivers that travelling with an assistance dog is a right and the law.
I would like to think that with my personality and voice, I challenge the stereotypes, proving that, given the right opportunities, people with disabilities can reach dazzling heights and flourish in any environment and industry.
My message is simple: “We are independent people and no different from anyone else.”
